In respect to the denial of the Certificate of Return to the Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, the Independent National Electoral Commission, has stated that it would meet on the situation next week.
Recall that the Imo State Governor had been declared the winner of the Imo West Senatorial district under duress.
Okorocha, in an effort to reclaim his mandate, wrote the chairman of the electoral body, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, where he stated that the commission does not have the right to withhold his certificate of return.
INEC in its reaction through the commissioner for information and voter education, Festus Okoye, stated though the case is in court, the chairman will meet with commissioners to decide the next step.
“INEC chairman will meet next week with Commissioners to deliberate on the latest letter written by Okorocha and take a look at the issue again. Both parties are in court, but the INEC chairman is outside the country and most of the commissioners are on duty,”.
He stated that the commissioner also stated that the electoral body is not moved by the comments attributed to the Governor.
The Commissioner stated that it will not take any decision outside the law.
“The case is in court but we believe what we are doing is in accordance with the law,” Okoye added.
